This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading business within the FMCG sector, taking responsibility for the technical performance of a major UK retailer account. You’ll play a pivotal role in protecting product quality, strengthening supplier relationships and driving technical standards across a diverse supply chain.

Working closely with retail stakeholders, growers, suppliers and internal commercial teams, you’ll have the autonomy to shape technical strategy, manage risk and deliver continuous improvement in a fast-paced, commercially focused environment.

Technical Manager

The Role

  • Technical Leadership: Take ownership of the technical function for a major retail account, developing and implementing strategies that deliver customer expectations, regulatory compliance and business objectives.
  • Retailer Relationship Management: Act as the key technical contact for the customer, leading technical meetings, coordinating site visits and ensuring issues are communicated and resolved effectively.
  • Supplier Management: Oversee technical performance across the supply base, conducting audits, monitoring compliance and driving corrective actions to maintain consistently high standards.
  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure products, specifications, documentation and processes meet customer codes of practice, legislative requirements and internal quality standards.
  • Technical Risk Management: Lead investigations into complaints, non-conformances and technical incidents, using root-cause analysis to implement robust corrective and preventative measures.
  • New Product Development: Provide technical oversight throughout product development and launch, ensuring products meet quality, safety and compliance requirements while supporting commercial innovation.
  • Performance & Continuous Improvement: Analyse technical KPIs, audit findings and quality trends to identify risks, improve supplier performance and enhance product consistency.
  • Business Planning: Work collaboratively with commercial, operational and development teams to deliver account objectives, manage technical expenditure and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and performance.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience in a Technical, Quality or Compliance role within the food or fresh produce industry is required
  • Experience managing retailer technical requirements, ideally working with major UK retailers such as M&S.
  • Strong knowledge of supplier auditing, technical compliance, product specifications, risk assessment and corrective action management.
  • Demonstrable experience managing supplier relationships and driving improvements across a supply chain.
  • Confidence handling customer-facing technical issues, leading investigations and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills, with the ability to interpret performance data, prioritise competing demands and deliver projects to deadline.
  • A proactive, commercially aware approach, with the confidence to challenge, influence and take ownership of technical decisions.
